Bonnaroo Music Festival Adds Comedy Lineup and More Artists

Bonnaroo announced more artist additions today, none of which are particularly amazing. But this is, after all, a festival that already boasts Phish, Bruce Springsteen, Nine Inch Nails, Wilco, TV on the Radio, Merle Haggard, and David Byrne plus a slew of others, so additions are extra gravy at this point. Bands just added to the lineup are:

Public Enemy
Ani DiFranco
Amadou & Mariam
Shadows Fall
Heartless Bastards
Tony Rice Unit
High On Fire
Passion Pit
Dillinger Escape Plan
Wailing Souls
The Itals
MURS
White Rabbits
Janelle MonĂ¡e
Hockey
Pretty Lights

The organizers also announced the complete lineup for the festival’s “Comedy Sweet,” which is sponsored by Butterfinger and will host the following artists:

Jimmy Fallon
Triumph the Insult Comic Dog Presents Bonnapoo 2009
An Evening (or Afternoon) with the Daily Show featuring John Oliver & Rob Riggle
Michael Ian Black & Michael Showalter
Aziz Ansari
Kristen Schaal
Arj Barker
Todd Barry
Rory Albanese
Wayne Federman
Nick Thune
Nick Kroll
Kurt Braunohler
Amy Schumer
Kumail Nanjiani
Pete Homes

These additions probably aren’t aimed at selling more tickets, since Phish’s presence on the card makes a sellout seemingly inevitable. However, the new acts do add even more diversity to the festival’s already improbable roster, with a healthy dose of world, reggae, dance, and hard rock, plus quasi-headliners like Ani DiFranco and Public Enemy.

One of these just-added bands will wind up being someone’s “new favorite band” by the time the weekend is over. A stay at Bonnaroo always produces memorable moments that you’re never expecting, and the organizers are setting fans up for plenty of chances to realize that potential. Something tells me that Pretty Lights will be the talk of the temporary town at some point, and that a band like Shadows Fall, High on Fire or Dillinger Escape Plan could wind up with handfuls of new fans.
